The week before the trial, Amann filed a number of motions, mostly with the intent of making sure that various issues couldn’t be brought up before the jury. Some of these were sealed and thus seen only by the parties to the case, but most were publicly viewable at the computer terminals in the clerk’s office of the Cook County Court at Chicago’s Daley Center. One such motion was especially conspicuous for not being sealed: Amann’s third motion in limine, which argued that at trial, the defense could not reference his romantic and sexual relationships with then-WWE wrestler Jillian Hall and an indie wrestler who he met at a WWE try-out event.

Dating patients is against doctors’ codes of ethics, given the innate power imbalance and potential to cloud one’s medical judgment, making this arguably a much more significant offense than anything that Punk accused him of doing. Considering that, seeing the motion in public court filings submitted by Amann’s own legal team was a bit of a shock.

To support Amman’s argument, exhibits to the motion included excerpts from multiple depositions taking during the course of the lawsuit, including Amann’s own. When asked by the defense, Amann answered “yes” to questions asking if he had “any relationship with [Hall] while she was a performer,” if they were “more than friends,” if they had “a romantic relationship,” and if they had “a sexual relationship.” The motion appears to have been successful, as none of this was brought up at trial, much less in front of the jury. The motion to exclude also says that the defense asked Amann if his relationship with a different woman, an independent wrestler who unsuccessfully tried out twice for WWE, “violated his obligations as a physician.” (The attached excerpts don’t include any line of questioning like that, although the motion implies it’s there.)

Reached by phone, Hall gave Deadspin permission to use her name in this story and confirmed that she had a romantic relationship with Amann while he was the traveling doctor overseeing WWE’s Monday Night Raw brand, which she was part of. (Hall had no direct involvement with Amann’s case against Cabana and Punk.)

NYU medical ethics professor Arthur Caplan told Deadspin that such a relationship would be obviously out of line for a physician. “It’s a huge ethics no-no,” he said. “You cannot have romantic relationships with your patients. There are a number of reasons why: First, it distorts your objectivity in terms of treating them. They can bamboozle you, or you can feel like ‘I wanna please them, so I’ll give them more pain meds,’ or whatever they’re asking for. Second, they have enough problems working with wrestlers because they have what we call dual loyalties.”

WWE doctors already have a difficult balance to strike in trying to honor both the company and the patient’s interests, and a romantic relationship with a patient complicates that further. Caplan also cited the inherent power imbalance in a doctor/patient romance as something that could, for instance, make a doctor less likely to send the patient out for necessary second opinions. “All of the codes of ethics say ‘Don’t do it,’” he said.

Multiple requests for comment sent to Amann and his lawyers have not been returned as of this writing. Asked about the court records revealing the Amann/Hall relationship, a WWE spokesperson issued the following statement to Deadspin:

We were not aware of this. We are investigating the matter and will determine if any action is warranted.

One wrestler who was on the Raw roster at the time Amann and Hall were dating told Deadspin that neither party tried to hide the relationship. The two appeared in a photograph archived in a wrestling news site’s photo gallerylooking like a couple. Amann’s pre-trial motion also cites two other depositions that allude to the Hall relationship:

Cliff Compton (real name Cliff Treiber), a wrestler and mutual friend of Punk and Cabana, testifying about Hall telling him about the then-active relationship, at a time when Treiber wasn’t in WWE.

Chaleen Rumpf, Punk’s sister, testified that Punk and Compton both told her about “unethical things that the doctors were doing” such as how “the doctor is sleeping with, you know, some of the wrestlers.”

Falling for a patient is a less egregious ethical violation than failing to discontinue the doctor/patient relationship once things turn romantic, according to Caplan. “Those things happen,” he said. “It’s fine to have it happen. You just get out of the way as the doctor, and the doctor should know enough to do it.”

At the time Amann and Hall were dating, WWE only had one doctor on each touring brand, which meant that handling this in a way consistent with medical ethics would involve switching one half of the relationship to the other tour—which would all but eliminate their ability see each other. Caplan noted that even though Amann’s superiors were not medical professionals, they would still have their own ethical duty to step in to end the doctor/patient or romantic relationship.

In all of this, there is a nagging question: Why was the damning pre-trial motion, exhibits and all, in the public court record and not filed under seal? After all, Amann’s lawyers filed some other pre-trial motions with the contents hidden from public view, and the motion about his personal relationships with wrestlers clearly had merit because none of this was mentioned at trial. Whatever the answer, though, between this and what came out at trial about Amann violating HIPAA privacy regulations in text messages to other WWE personnel, it looks like his lawsuit turned out to be much more trouble than it was worth.

PLANS FOR EXTREME RULES 2018 MAIN EVENT CHANGED?

As we noted before, the following two matches were being originally advertised for next month’s Extreme Rules 2018 PPV:

– Roman Reigns, Braun Strowman & Bobby Lashley vs. Jinder Mahal, Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn (Main Event from RAW)

– Daniel Bryan vs. Big Cass (Main Event from SmackDown Live)

However, new matches are now being advertised for next month’s Extreme Rules 2018 PPV and you can check them out below:

– Roman Reigns vs. Jinder Mahal

– Daniel Bryan vs. The Miz

While these matches are the only matches that are being advertised as of now, there’s a pretty good chance that these matches don’t actually end up being the main matches on the PPV and that they are just early advertised matches.

Expect a WWE Championship match to be the main event from SmackDown Live. Regarding the main event from the RAW side, it’s very much possible that a #1 contenders match takes place in the main event of the show, with the winner facing Brock Lesnar for the Universal Championship at SummerSlam 2018.

This was also the main event of last year’s Extreme Rules PPV, where Samoa Joe earned the right to face Brock Lesnar for the Universal Championship.
