"For one, all along we were told the only men off the show were Bryan and Cena, who decided against going, and Zayn, who the Saudi Arabian government told WWE they didn’t want him on the show due to his ethnicity."
It was speculated that WWE made the call to protect Sami from possible harm. I'm adding this as it confirms that in fact it was the Saudi government who prompted that call.

The biggest story involved Zayn bringing up AEW during a promo. This was supposed to be part of the show but I have no idea why. The idea was apparently that it makes Raw edgy because somebody said something they wouldn’t be allowed to say. To get it over more, on the YouTube replay of the segment they edited it out. The key is that there is a 15 second delay before something hits television and that is enough time to edit it out. In addition, it was left in the Hulu replay, which is a heavily post-edited version of the show. Plus, two company sources confirmed the line was scripted. That said, within the company, many if not most were told otherwise and when Zayn gave the line, Vince McMahon did act like he was freaking out. But it wasn’t edited off the show. Since the buck stops with him, either it was miscommunication (which is what we were told) or an attempt to work everyone (a dangerous situation that leads to mistrust and copies the silliness that was WCW at the end).

Sami Zayn is set to run another fundraising campaign to benefit medical relief efforts in Syria, and it will begin at the same time as WWE Super ShowDown. Zayn posted to Twitter on Wednesday to announce the campaign, which is in partnership with the Syrian American Medical Society. It will launch a new mobile clinic and kicks off at 2 PM ET on Friday, which is the same time as the main card of WWE’s Saudi Arabia PPV begins.

"Zayn was having trouble with his shoulders in recent months which is why he’s been wrestling less and has been managing Nakamura. But we’re told he’s okay now and can wrestle but this is the role they have him in."
